    Abnormal returns, risk, and financial statement data: The case of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait

    This paper examines abnormal returns and changes in risk for transportation firms immediately around the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Further, it tests whether the variation in the abnormal returns can be explained cross-sectionally with standard financial and industry-descriptive variables. The results indicate that transportation firms suffered a −2.09% abnormal return and increases in unsystematic risk. The cross sectional regression explains 31% of the variation in the abnormal returns, with firm size, liquidity, leverage, percentage of sales to the Department of Defense, and dummy variables denoting firms producing recreational vehicles or owning oil-producing subsidiaries contributing significantly to the regression

    Assessing Photoreceptor Structure Associated with Ellipsoid Zone Disruptions Visualized with Optical Coherence Tomography

    Purpose: To compare images of photoreceptor layer disruptions obtained with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) in a variety of pathologic states.Methods: Five subjects with photoreceptor ellipsoid zone disruption as per OCT and clinical diagnoses of closed-globe blunt ocular trauma (n = 2), macular telangiectasia type 2 (n = 1), blue-cone monochromacy (n = 1), or cone-rod dystrophy (n = 1) were included. Images were acquired within and around photoreceptor lesions using spectral domain OCT, confocal AOSLO, and split-detector AOSLO.Results: There were substantial differences in the extent and appearance of the photoreceptor mosaic as revealed by confocal AOSLO, split-detector AOSLO, and spectral domain OCT en face view of the ellipsoid zone.Conclusion: Clinically available spectral domain OCT, viewed en face or as B-scan, may lead to misinterpretation of photoreceptor anatomy in a variety of diseases and injuries. This was demonstrated using split-detector AOSLO to reveal substantial populations of photoreceptors in areas of no, low, or ambiguous ellipsoid zone reflectivity with en face OCT and confocal AOSLO. Although it is unclear if these photoreceptors are functional, their presence offers hope for therapeutic strategies aimed at preserving or restoring photoreceptor function

Management trends include a broadening of responsibility for all departments. In order to satisfy these new responsibilities, maintenance, operations, and engineering personnel need continuous review of compressor types, classifications, and applications. Companies are discovering the void in talent that right sizing has created and most organizations retain a core group of experienced professionals who are utilized as a reference resource. The turbomachinery grass roots introduction seeks to present elementary compressor concepts to all interested parties. This group will also certainly need a working knowledge of aerodynamics, blade design (and repair), magnetic bearing theory, and advanced thermodynamic concepts. The compressor types introductory program does not address these more advanced topics. Compressor Types starts at the beginning of the user/manufacturer relationship with applications. Moreover, utilizing Balje's [ 1] work on specific speed as a focal point, the following concepts will be covered at entry level: • Fan, blower, compressor differentiation • Curve shape and where to operate • Head, flow, horsepower; calculations • The specific speed of positive displacement machinery • The specific speed of single stage centrifugals • Applications Vents Flares Oxidizers Overhead recompression Process recompression Transmission The Compressor Types Program is an ongoing program offered by the Turbomachinery Laboratory at Texas A&M University to assist industry professionals in gaining exposure to elementary compressor concepts to help them assume their broadening compressor responsibilities in the 1990s

    The Escherichia coli RutR transcription factor binds at targets within genes as well as intergenic regions.

    The Escherichia coli RutR protein is the master regulator of genes involved in pyrimidine catabolism. Here we have used chromatin immunoprecipitation in combination with DNA microarrays to measure the binding of RutR across the chromosome of exponentially growing E. coli cells. Twenty RutR-binding targets were identified and analysis of these targets generated a DNA consensus logo for RutR binding. Complementary in vitro binding assays showed high-affinity RutR binding to 16 of the 20 targets, with the four low-affinity RutR targets lacking predicted key binding determinants. Surprisingly, most of the DNA targets for RutR are located within coding segments of the genome and appear to have little or no effect on transcript levels in the conditions tested. This contrasts sharply with other E. coli transcription factors whose binding sites are primarily located in intergenic regions. We suggest that either RutR has yet undiscovered function or that evolution has been slow to eliminate non-functional DNA sites for RutR because they do not have an adverse effect on cell fitness

    The role of upstream sequences in selecting the reading frame on tmRNA

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>tmRNA acts first as a tRNA and then as an mRNA to rescue stalled ribosomes in eubacteria. Two unanswered questions about tmRNA function remain: how does tmRNA, lacking an anticodon, bypass the decoding machinery and enter the ribosome? Secondly, how does the ribosome choose the proper codon to resume translation on tmRNA? According to the -1 triplet hypothesis, the answer to both questions lies in the unique properties of the three nucleotides upstream of the first tmRNA codon. These nucleotides assume an A-form conformation that mimics the codon-anticodon interaction, leading to recognition by the decoding center and choice of the reading frame. The -1 triplet hypothesis is important because it is the most credible model in which direct binding and recognition by the ribosome sets the reading frame on tmRNA.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Conformational analysis predicts that 18 triplets cannot form the correct structure to function as the -1 triplet of tmRNA. We tested the tmRNA activity of all possible -1 triplet mutants using a genetic assay in <it>Escherichia coli</it>. While many mutants displayed reduced activity, our findings do not match the predictions of this model. Additional mutagenesis identified sequences further upstream that are required for tmRNA function. An immunoblot assay for translation of the tmRNA tag revealed that certain mutations in U85, A86, and the -1 triplet sequence result in improper selection of the first codon and translation in the wrong frame (-1 or +1) <it>in vivo</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings disprove the -1 triplet hypothesis. The -1 triplet is not required for accommodation of tmRNA into the ribosome, although it plays a minor role in frame selection. Our results strongly disfavor direct ribosomal recognition of the upstream sequence, instead supporting a model in which the binding of a separate ligand to A86 is primarily responsible for frame selection.</p
